Metal Design Systems, Inc. collaborated on the Science of Spirituality project in Lisle, IL, which posed challenges in both appearance and complexity. Initially, the façade was to be GFRC, but due to framing, weight, and design issues, we proposed .125 aluminum panels using the Series 72 Hook and Pin system. We created 76 segmented columns around the building’s radius, supported by a vertical truss system with precise angles. The owner provided a filigree pattern, which was cut into the upper panels using advanced equipment. The panels were painted in two custom gold colors, creating a multidimensional effect. MDSI fabricated a mock-up to streamline the process, scanned the building for accurate data, and delivered 1,549 panels covering over 31,500 square feet.
